Short answer: The NCPT exam is the Comprehensive certification exam of the National Pilates Certification Program (NPCP): 125 multiple-choice questions, 100 of them scored, in 3 hours. The passing score is 78 of the 100 scored items. You need at least 450 hours of Comprehensive training, and the exam fee is USD 300.
The NCPT exam is the independent exam that awards the credential “Nationally Certified Pilates Teacher (NCPT)”, in the wording of NPCP’s own application page. It is separate from any school’s final exam: your school confirms your training, and NPCP tests you. This guide gives only numbers we could check on NPCP’s official pages and candidate handbook, each with a link and the date we last checked it (27 September 2026). Where NPCP’s own pages disagree, we say so. The guide ends with a 12-week study plan built around the four official exam domains.
Who is eligible to take the NCPT exam?
You are eligible if you are at least 18 and have completed a Comprehensive teacher education that includes “Mat, Reformer, Trapeze Table, Wunda Chair, Ladder Barrel, Spine Corrector, and Magic Circle” and is “minimally 450 hours” (NPCP FAQ, last checked 27 September 2026). The candidate handbook adds: “Verification of comprehensive education is obtained from the school, mentor, or authorized person” (NPCP Candidate Handbook 2026).
From 1 January 2027, updated rules also define how those hours may be delivered. We explain them line by line in our guide to the NPCP 2027 requirements. There is a separate Mat exam (credential NPCP-PMC) that needs at least 100 hours of Mat training.

One inconsistency to know about: the Comprehensive handbook says “There is an additional $105 fee for testing at a testing center outside of the US and Canada”, which matches the USD 405 on the application page, while the FAQ still says “an additional fee of $100.00”. Check the amount shown at checkout. The application page also states: “Fees are nonrefundable.”

NPCP states that “Meazure Learning is the test administration company that administers all examinations for the NPCP on the ProctorU platform.” If you choose the online option, the application page asks for a technology compatibility check before test day.
What does the NCPT exam cover?
The exam content outline has four domains. The number of scored items per domain comes from the candidate handbook:

Notice that observation and professionalism together make up 40 of the 100 scored items. Repertoire knowledge alone is not enough.
Do I need the official study materials?
No. NPCP says: “All study materials are optional. The exam is designed to measure the skill and knowledge of a comprehensively trained candidate” (NPCP Study Materials, last checked 27 September 2026). The same page lists an official study guide and a set of 60 practice questions if you want them. Your own training notes and manuals remain the core material.
How can I prepare for the NCPT exam in 12 weeks?
This plan assumes you have finished, or nearly finished, a Comprehensive training. Adjust the pace to your schedule; it is a structure, not a promise of a result.

What happens on test day and after?
The handbook says candidates “See the results immediately after the exam submission.” If you do not pass, you may retake the exam “15 days following the most recent attempt”, and “If a passing score is not achieved in 3 attempts, candidates must wait 12 months after the third attempt to retake the exam” (Comprehensive handbook). Testing-centre candidates may reschedule “up to 48 hours prior” without losing the fee.

Our advice for exam preparation
At Code Pilates Academy, our founder Barış Özdemir holds the NCPT himself. Three recommendations as you prepare:
- Study for judgement, not only lists. Exercise names and spring settings matter, but the exam also asks about intake, observation and scope of practice. Make observation and practice teaching part of your revision.
- Do not neglect the apparatus beyond Mat and Reformer. Trapeze Table, Chair and Barrels appear in the Technical Expertise domain through set-up and safety. Plan a full week for them.
- Use recorded material as review only. Our Code Online Studio library of recorded mastery workshops is useful for revisiting repertoire and teaching details. It is not exam preparation from NPCP and does not carry NPCP CECs.

The FAQ still mentions USD 100 extra, so check the amount at checkout. The Mat exam is USD 225, or USD 325 at a testing centre outside the US and Canada.
Can I take the NCPT exam online?
Yes. NPCP’s application page lists “Online, remote live proctored (home or office)” as an option next to testing centres worldwide. The exams run on the ProctorU platform, administered by Meazure Learning, and the online route requires a technology compatibility check before test day. You must test within 90 days of submitting your application. Last checked 27 September 2026.
What happens if I fail the NCPT exam?
You may retake it 15 days after your most recent attempt. The Comprehensive retake fee is USD 155, plus USD 105 at a testing centre outside the US and Canada; the Mat retake fee is USD 150. Does completing a teacher training make me an NCPT?
No. A school confirms that you completed its training, and NPCP then decides on your application and tests you. Only passing the NPCP exam awards the NCPT credential. Code Pilates Academy’s Mat and Comprehensive pathways are listed in NPCP’s School Directory as a Verified Teacher Training Program, which NPCP describes as the school’s own attestation, not an accreditation.
