Short answer: Under the NPCP 2027 requirements, a Comprehensive Pilates teacher training must still be at least 450 hours. What changes is delivery: history and anatomy may be pre-recorded if a quiz supports them, while repertoire, special populations and part of observation and practice teaching must be taught in person or live virtual.
The NPCP 2027 requirements are the updated eligibility rules that the National Pilates Certification Program (NPCP) will apply to candidates for its Comprehensive exam, the exam that leads to the NCPT (Nationally Certified Pilates Teacher) credential. NPCP states: “The updated eligibility will take effect on January 1, 2027” (NPCP Requirements, last checked 27 September 2026). This guide quotes the official text line by line, explains what each line means if you are choosing a course now, and lists the questions worth asking a school before you pay. Rules can change, so read the NPCP page again before you enrol.
What are the NPCP 2027 requirements, line by line?

What actually changes on 1 January 2027?
The minimum hours and the apparatus list match what NPCP’s FAQ already describes: a Comprehensive teacher education that “must be minimally 450 hours” and covers the same seven apparatus (NPCP FAQ, last checked 27 September 2026). The new part is the delivery rule. The updated text separates what may be watched on demand from what must be taught in real time.
NPCP explains the purpose in one sentence: the requirements “are designed to promote clarity, consistency, and verifiability in candidate preparation, supporting readiness for safe professional practice.”
In plain terms: recorded history and anatomy with a quiz, real-time teaching for repertoire and special populations, partly live supervised observation and practice teaching, and proportions that the school decides and should be able to show you.
Does “live virtual” count, or must I be in the room?
Live virtual counts. The official wording is “in-person or live virtual”, and NPCP leaves the exact component “to be determined by the school”. Some online summaries describe the 2027 rule as an in-person requirement. The official text does not say that.
Live virtual training is real-time teaching over video in which the educator and the trainees see, hear and respond to each other. NPCP’s FAQ uses a similar idea for continuing education, describing live streaming as sessions “where the instructor and the participants share a virtual space and there is interaction among them” (NPCP FAQ). A video you watch alone later is pre-recorded, even if it was filmed during a live class.
What this means for you: an online programme can still meet the 2027 text if its repertoire, special-populations and part of its supervised hours are delivered live. A course made only of recorded videos cannot meet those three lines.
What can still be pre-recorded?
Only history of Pilates and anatomy are named as content that “may be pre-recorded”, and only with a quiz. Self-practice is left to the school. If a course is mostly on-demand video, ask which parts are live and how many hours they represent.
I finish my training in 2026 or early 2027. Which rules apply to me?
NPCP gives a transition window: “Graduates of programs that do not meet the new standards will have a six-month grace period from the effective date to apply for NPCP certification” (NPCP Requirements). The effective date is 1 January 2027, so the window runs for six months from that day. Confirm the exact cut-off with NPCP before you plan around it.
Also note that “Eligibility lasts 90 days from application submission” (NPCP exam application, last checked 27 September 2026), so apply early if you rely on the grace period.
What about the Mat certification (NPCP-PMC)?
The 2027 requirements page covers Comprehensive certification only. For the Mat exam, NPCP’s FAQ says candidates need a Mat teacher education “based on Return to Life” that is “a minimum of 100 hours” (NPCP FAQ). Return to Life Through Contrology is the method founder’s own book. We did not find a 2027 delivery rule for Mat on NPCP’s pages on 27 September 2026, so check with NPCP directly if you are choosing a Mat-only course.
Does NPCP approve or accredit Pilates schools?
No. NPCP’s School Directory says: “The schools listed below are not approved or accredited by the NPCP” (NPCP Schools Directory). A school can be listed as a Verified Program, which NPCP defines as follows: “Verified Program means the school has attested that its teacher training meets the eligibility requirements for graduates to sit for the applicable NPCP exam or exams” (NPCP Schools Resource Page, both last checked 27 September 2026). Listings must be renewed every year.
A “verified” listing is therefore the school’s own declaration, not an accreditation, and you are entitled to ask how a school meets each 2027 line.
What should you ask a school before you enrol?
- How many total hours does the Comprehensive programme have, and how are they split between lectures, observation, practice teaching and self-practice?
- Which parts are pre-recorded, and is there a quiz for each recorded anatomy and history unit?
- Which repertoire and special-populations hours are taught in person or live virtual?
- How many observation and practice-teaching hours are supervised live, and by whom?
- Does the programme cover all seven apparatus named by NPCP?
- Is the school listed in the NPCP School Directory, and when was the listing last renewed?
- What is the final assessment, and what happens if you do not pass it the first time?
Ask for the answers in writing.
Our advice before you enrol
If you are choosing a course under the 2027 rules, keep these points in mind:
- Answer “Will online still count?” component by component. The 2027 text does not answer that for a whole course. Go through the table above line by line before you choose a format.
- Do not underestimate observation and practice teaching. It is tempting to plan around repertoire, yet this is where teaching skill grows, and part of these hours must now be supervised live.
- Use recorded material for revision. Our Code Online Studio is a recorded library of mastery workshops for reviewing repertoire and teaching details after a course. It does not replace training hours, and its recordings are not NPCP CEC courses.

Finishing a course does not make anyone an NCPT. The credential needs a separate application and a passed exam, and no school can guarantee that result.

Which parts of a course may be pre-recorded under the 2027 rules?

Repertoire, special populations and a school-defined portion of observation and practice teaching need an in-person or live virtual element. Recorded workshop libraries bought separately are not part of that calculation unless your school includes them.
Does NPCP accredit or approve my Pilates school?
No. NPCP’s directory states that listed schools “are not approved or accredited by the NPCP.” A Verified Program listing means the school has attested that its training meets the eligibility requirements, and the listing must be renewed yearly. It is a declaration by the school. Ask any school, including ours, to explain in writing how its programme meets each 2027 line.
Does the 2027 update change how NCPT is renewed?
The 2027 requirements page covers eligibility for the exam, not renewal. On 27 September 2026, NPCP’s FAQ still says Comprehensive certificants must earn 16 NPCP-approved CECs in a two-year renewal period, and Mat certificants 8. Code Pilates CEC workshops are live and listed at 3 NPCP CEC each. Recorded Code Online Studio workshops are not CEC courses.
