About REFORMER-1

Reformer 1 is the first apparatus-based module in the Balanced Body education pathway and builds directly upon the Movement Principles and Pilates Essentials foundation. This course introduces instructors to the essential Reformer repertoire while emphasizing safety, clarity of movement, and purposeful exercise sequencing.

Throughout the training, participants explore the anatomy and mechanics of the Reformer, learning how spring resistance, carriage movement, and footbar positions influence load, control, and movement efficiency. Strong attention is given to equipment setup, safety protocols, and developing consistent habits that support confident teaching in both private and group settings.

Reformer 1 focuses on teaching core Reformer exercises through a progressive structure. Participants learn how to organize exercises into logical movement arcs, recognize appropriate starting points, and apply regressions or progressions based on client needs. The course emphasizes observing movement quality, maintaining control of the moving carriage, and integrating balance, coordination, and breath throughout each exercise.

Movement Principles are continuously reinforced as students practice finding neutral alignment, understanding lumbopelvic stability, and coordinating inner and outer unit support. Special attention is given to leg alignment, spinal organization, and upper- and lower-body integration across foundational exercises such as Footwork, Bridging, Arm Work, The Hundred, Kneeling Series, Long Stretch Series, and introductory box and strap work.

Teaching skills are a central component of Reformer 1. Participants actively practice cueing, coaching, and class organization, learning how to communicate clearly and adapt exercises for different bodies. Student teaching segments allow instructors to apply principles in real time, developing confidence and professionalism in their teaching voice.

The course also introduces informed modifications and contraindications, including considerations for pregnancy and osteoporosis, reinforcing client-centered decision-making. By the end of Reformer 1, instructors are equipped with the tools to safely teach essential Reformer exercises, structure effective sessions, and continue progressing within the Balanced Body instructor training pathway

(Movement Principles is the foundation of the Balanced Body education pathway and is strongly recommended prior to attending Reformer 1. Completion of Movement Principles is required in order to continue toward Balanced Body certification and to progress to advanced Reformer modules.)
